Andrew Manly

Communications Director - Active and Intelligent Packaging Industry Association

Andrew Manly joined the packaging industry in the late 1970s to run a buyers and specifiers information service about packaging machines and materials. As this pre-dated the computer age, think more Encyclopedia Britannica than Wikipedia!

From the mid 80s he helped to found and then ran the Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA) in the UK, organising its Show and starting the Machinery Update journal, both of which still thrive. After a brief spell as Director General of the Machine Tool Association (MTA), he became an independent packaging consultant and journalist, writing for several clients from the machinery sector, and still edits the Aluminium Foil Association newsletter.

In 2011 he helped to create the Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association (AIPIA) and has held the position as Communications Director since.

He used to play Rugby Union football, (very badly) but as he is reputedly good at organising he ended up on the RFU Council for some years. He is a Board member of the International Packaging Press Organisation (IPPO).

Stream One: Keynote – Smart Packaging – How can packaging be part of the sustainability solution?

Active & Intelligent Packaging has now reached a critical phase of development. Brand Owners no longer need convincing that there is ‘something to it’ and that the technologies work. But the next milestone for A&IP practitioners is to show the real benefits of these solutions in the value chain.

The session will also cover the latest advances in manufacturing and design to provide scalable and low cost production as well as components that can be integrated into existing graphics and established Brand images. Finally some of the latest A&IP trends, such as Augmented Reality, will be reviewed.
